5 Amazing Health Benefits of Apples
For many of us, the crispness of an autumn day coupled with the crispness of a freshly-picked apple brings a smile to our faces. Autumn is upon us, and although you probably have many fond memories of apples and the changing seasons, you might not know about the amazing health benefits of this quintessential fall fruit:
- The skin of the apple is very rich in an antioxidant known as ”quercetin” which has been shown in studies to lower the risk of heart disease, as well as protect cells from free radical damage. Lab studies on quercetin have shown it has the ability to inhibit the growth of tumors and help prevent cancer cells from spreading.
- Another major health benefit from apples is their high fiber content (both soluble and insoluble); just one medium sized apple has 4 grams of fiber! Insoluble fiber’s assist in bowel management. This type of fiber will pass through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract intact because it does not dissolve in water.
- Apples are also a source of soluble fiber. Unlike insoluble fiber, soluble fiber doesn’t pass through the GI tract intact; it forms a gellike substance that slows down digestion. Eating foods high in soluble fiber will leave you feeling full after you eat.
- Apples also contain pectin, a form of a soluble fiber that slows digestion. This, in turn, also slows the rise in blood sugars, thus making it a good snack choice for those with diabetes.
- Lastly, studies have also named apples as a super food that may be beneficial in brain health which could help both with memory loss and the prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Five Star's Apple Crumb Pie
- 4-6 tart apples
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 unbaked pie shell
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 3/4 cup flour
- 1/3 cup butter
- Preheat oven to 450° F.
- Peel apples and slice; place in pie shell.
- Sprinkle sugar and cinnamon over apples.
- Mix remaining ½ cup sugar, flour, and butter together until mixture is crumbly.
- Sprinkle over apples.
- Bake 10 minutes at 450° F.
- Reduce heat to 350° F for another 30 minutes or until apples are tender.
