Our safety guidelines

Resident safety always comes first, and we’re being more vigilant than ever.

Playing it safe

At every Five Star community, we adhere to state and local protocols as well as guidelines put forth by the CDC. We never take risks when it comes to resident safety, because every person at Five Star is part of our family.

From the very start of the COVID-19 outbreak, we’ve strived to offer the gold standard in safety and care by maximizing our residents’ well-being while minimizing the disruption to daily living. We also want to be completely transparent about the steps we’re taking so residents and families know what to expect. Here, we’re sharing all the steps we’re taking to ensure resident safety throughout the pandemic.

Administering vaccines

In accordance with the Emergency Use Authorization granted by the Food and Drug Administration, we are actively vaccinating our residents and team members against COVID-19. For more information, click here.

Daily precautions

Following CDC guidelines means we’re taking steps every day to protect against COVID-19. Our safety measures include:

  • Consistent and proper use of face masks and other PPE
  • Hand hygiene awareness
  • Physical distancing in all common areas
  • Enhanced ventilation
  • Frequent sanitization of common areas using a touchless infection control sprayer with 360-degree reach
  • Modified furniture layout
  • Use of barriers and partitions
  • Enhanced infection control procedures
  • Special training for team members
  • Redesigned resident engagement activities

COVID-19 testing

At Five Star communities, we regularly test both residents and team members. Residents who test positive are carefully monitored while in quarantine within the community and their family is notified right away. Team members who test positive quarantine away from the community and return only upon testing negative.

Family visits

We know how important connecting with loved ones is during this time. While sitting together inside may not be safe right now, there are still lots of ways to “visit” together. Our team members can help you connect virtually as often as you like and if you’re in a warm climate, visiting safely outside is an option. Each community has a reopening plan allowing them to pivot quickly as infection rates, CDC guidelines, and state and local mandates shift.

Team member interaction

Because our team members don’t live inside the community, we’re extremely careful about making sure they’re virus-free upon coming to work. Our team members genuinely care about every resident and want to ensure they’re not putting anyone at risk.

Not only are team members tested regularly, but they undergo daily health screenings and temperature checks, remain six feet from residents whenever possible, wear face masks at all times, and practice good hand hygiene. Additionally, team members have taken enhanced infection-control training and pledged to remain vigilant and aware of their role in preventing the spread of COVID-19 and reducing the potential risk of exposure in Five Star Senior Living offices, communities, and Ageility clinics.

Communal dining

Life at Five Star communities has always revolved around eating, thanks to our chef-created meals and communal dining. We’ve put new precautions in place to greatly minimize risk while continuing to offer a physically distanced dining environment. Residents are required to wear face masks when not eating or drinking and must remain six feet apart at all times. We’re limiting seating in dining rooms, modifying table settings and furniture, and enhancing sanitation between seatings. In addition, our chefs are given daily health screenings, tested regularly, and always wear face masks and practice good hand hygiene.
