When you are searching for a senior living community for an older loved one, making a personal visit to meet the staff, residents, and to take a tour is important. It is the single best way to determine if the community is one your senior family member will be comfortable calling home. To help you make the most of your time there, we’ve put together a few suggestions on what to look for and what questions to ask.

Tips on What to Look for When Touring an Assisted Living Community

When you visit an assisted living community to determine if it is a good option for your senior loved one, here are a few tips on what to look for:

  1. Cleanliness: Are common areas of the community clean and tidy? Are resident rooms in good condition and have adequate amounts of space and storage? Is the community odor-free?
  2. Safety & Security: Is there ample parking for residents and visitors with good lighting? Are there handrails in the hallways, grab bars in bedrooms and bathrooms? Is there an emergency call system? Are exterior doors locked at all times?
  3. Residents’ Appearance: Do residents look tidy and well-cared for? Are residents dressed appropriately for both the time of day and the season of the year?
  4. Staff: Do staff members seem to know residents by name? Are residents and staff interacting in positive ways?
  5. Activity: Are there life enrichment activities or resident events going on throughout the community? Ask for a copy of the resident calendar and check to see what events are scheduled during your visit and if they are going on as planned.

Questions to Ask the Staff at an Assisted Living Community

Taking time before your tour to formulate a list of questions to ask on your visit can help you avoid forgetting anything. A few to include are:

  • How much training do staff members receive at the time of hire and on-going afterward?
  • How long is the average tenure of an employee?
  • What is the ratio of caregivers to residents?
  • Are background checks performed before new staff is hired?
  • What services are included in the monthly resident fee?
  • Are there any additional charges that aren’t included in the monthly fee?
  • If your senior loved one experiences a short-term illness that requires extra care, would those services be available?
  • What changes or conditions would require your aging loved one to move somewhere else?
