Byron Driscoll
Executive Director


Byron was born in Jacksonville, North Carolina and raised in a military family. Byron’s  father was a Marine Aviator. Being raised in a military family, Byron has traveled extensively and has lived in several states including Florida, California, Hawaii, South Carolina, Vermont and Virginia. Byron earned his MBA in Healthcare Administration from Liberty University and has spent the last ten years working in Senior Living Communities. Byron joined the Five Star Senior Living family in March of 2018 as an Administrator in Training. Byron successfully completed this AIT Program and was promoted to the Executive Director of The Gardens of Virginia Beach in July of 2019. Byron most recently moved to Moyock, North Carolina where he resides with his wife Anita. In his spare time, Byron enjoys spending time on the beaches of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, golfing, and spending quality time at home with his wife. 

Barbara Boeninger
Director of Sales & Marketing

Barbara joined The Gardens of Virginia Beach as The Sales and Marketing Director in 2018 and has over 20 years of experience in the senior living industry. Barbara was raised in a military family. She was born in Bethesda MD, then lived in California and graduated high school in Tainan, Taiwan. She has dedicated her career to providing education and support to seniors and their families. Barbara’s military upbringing has made her especially passionate about working with Veterans and their families that she meets in the senior living industry. In her spare time, Barbara loves retreating to her backyard with her 3 dogs, traveling with her husband and spending time with their grandchildren.

Mary Harrison
Sales Associate


Mary Harrison joined The Gardens of Virginia Beach as a Sales Associate in 2019. Although Mary was born here in Virginia Beach, she grew up in a Navy family traveling the East Coast. After graduating from Roanoke College, Mary started in the healthcare field as an Activities Director. While this was a very rewarding and fun position, she learned that supporting families in finding the perfect community was truly her passion. When Mary isn’t working, she enjoys spending time with her dog and playing golf with her husband. 

Sherry Bodie
Director of Resident Care

Sherry joined the team at The Gardens of Virginia Beach in July of 2019 as the Director of Resident Care. Sherry was born and raised in a small town in the Mid-West outside of Kansas City Missouri until she was 18 years old. Sherry married and has moved several times over the years with her husband who was in the US Navy. Sherry and her family currently live in Suffolk, Virginia. Sherry has been a nurse for 41 years with experience working in Labor and Delivery, Post Operating Room and Geriatrics. Sherry’s passion for working in Geriatrics came from her experience with her own parents when they were aging. Sherry recognized a large need for good nurses in Geriatrics and found a passion for this field. Sherry is also a certified wound care nurse and a Dementia Care Practitioner. Sherry has delivered all of her granddaughters which is one of the high lights of her  nursing career. Sherry enjoys being part of the management team at the  Gardens of Virginia Beach and feels very at home in the community. Sherry finds her work very rewarding and knows that she makes a difference  in the lives of the residents and their families every day. When Sherry is not at the community she loves spending her free time on the water, playing on three pool teams, baking and doing  needlework. Sherry has been married for 22 years, had 5 children and 6 grandchildren. 

Robert “Bob” McCarthy
Director of Food and Dining

Bob joined the team at The Gardens of Virginia Beach as the Food and Dining Director in 2015. Bob was born in Hornell NY and completed his studies at The State University of New York Alfred. Bob has twenty years’ experience as a Manager with Riverside Health System, has worked in the Food Service Industry for many years and has also owned his own restaurant. Some other accomplishments of Bob’s include being a Certified Food Service Manager, working with Celebrity Chefs Wolfgang Puck and K Paul Prudhomme and participating in The World Economic Summit under President Bush. Bob enjoys creating meals for the residents and interacting with the residents in their home.  He says “it makes me feel like I am living with my parents, making sure they are being heard and loved”. Bob is the proud father of two daughters Emily and Kate and loves spending time with his two grandchildren when he is away from work. 

Francis Williams
Director of Housekeeping

Francis joined the team at The Gardens of Virginia Beach 14 years ago as the Lead Cook. From this role, Francis was then promoted to the Housekeeping Supervisor 6 years ago. Francis was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware. After high school, Francis joined the US Navy and retired after 20 years of dedicated service in Supply and Hospitality. Francis is a Certified Food Service Manager, has a Serve Safe Certification and is also a trained Personal Care Aide. Francis was also chosen to be a Five Star Brand Champion and Trainer. In this role, Francis teaches all team members how to deliver excellent customer service to the residents and family members of the community. Francis loves the daily challenges of his job and especially enjoys meeting the residents and their families and learning all about their lives. He loves being able to make a difference in the lives of the residents that live in our community, their families, his co-workers, and all guests who visit the community. He has lived in Gaeta, Italy, Norfolk, Virginia, and currently resides in Virginia Beach, Virginia. When Francis is away from the community, he loves spending time with his two daughters, one son and four beautiful grandchildren. 

Susan Grover
Business Office Manager

Susan joined the team at The Gardens of Virginia Beach 17 years ago and has successfully held several positions in the community over the years. Susan’s first position at the community was as a front desk Concierge in 2001. She quickly proved herself in this position and realized how much she loved interacting with the residents. Susan was promoted to the Activities Director position and from there has also held an Administration Assistant role and Human Resources Manager role. Susan is currently the Business Office Manager of the community.  In all of these roles over the years, Susan says what she loves most about her job is getting to know all the residents and listening to their life stories  Susan was born in Massachusetts where she started working at her parents produce and flower shop at the age of 12. Susan moved with her family to Dunoon, Scotland in 1989 and then to Virginia Beach in 1993. Susan has two children she is very proud of. Susan’s daughter currently resides in Colorado and her son currently lives in Nashville. When Susan is away from the community, she enjoys going to the gym and relaxing with an occasional spa day during her time off. She is also an avid New England sports fan. 

Wendy Williams
Bridge To Rediscovery Director

Wendy is The Bridge to Rediscovery Director and joined the team at The Gardens of Virginia Beach in 2015. Wendy was born in a small town in Iowa and moved to Virginia in 1993. Wendy started at the community as a front desk Concierge and was then promoted to the SL360 Director role in the same year. Wendy embraced her new role as the LS360 Activities Director and enjoyed the interaction she had every day with the residents. While in this role, Wendy realized her passion was caring and working with residents that have Dementia.  Wendy then transitioned to the dedicated memory care neighborhood in the community in 2018 as the Director of the Bridge To Rediscovery. Now Wendy is able to dedicate all her time with residents that suffer with Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. Wendy is a Certified Dementia Practitioner and is passionate about learning the unique song that is in each of her resident’s hearts and singing it to them when they have forgotten. In this role, Wendy understands that each resident’s life experiences and interests make a difference in how to care and connect with each resident individually. She loves to organize and plan daily opportunities for her residents to socialize learn and enjoy each day to its fullest. When Wendy isn’t at The Gardens of Virginia Beach she enjoys spending time on the beach, writing poetry, and spending time with her grandson.

Tim Harris
Director of Environmental Services

Tim joined Five Star Senior Living in 1996 as the Maintenance Director at the Five Star Senior Living Community, Dominion Village of Chesapeake. In 2007, Tim was promoted to the Regional Team as an Area Chief Engineer. After working for many years on the Regional Team, Tim decided to dedicate all of his time in one community and joined the team at The Gardens of Virginia Beach as the Director of Environmental Services. Tim was born in Norfolk, Virginia at Norfolk General Hospital and has resided in Virginia his entire life. Prior to working at Five Star Senior Living, Tim also worked at a Ford assembly plant and the Jonathan Corporation shipyard. Tim has three daughters and six grandchildren and another on the way at the end of August. Tim enjoys the day to day challenges of maintaining the community and takes pride in providing the care and compassion that our residents deserve.

Marcie Owens
Lifestyle360 Director

Marcie joined the team at The Gardens of Virginia Beach as the Lifestyle360 Director in October of 2018. Marcie loves her job and enjoys being a part of helping residents to thrive and be engaged in their community. Marcie plans, coordinates and leads activities for the residents every day. She also loves planning new activities for the residents to enjoy too. Marcie knows it’s never too late to try something new! Marcie graduated from college with a Sociology Degree and worked at her families business while earning her college degree. After graduation, Marcie decided to continue to work at the family business until her parents retired in April of 2015. Having a love for the elderly all of her life, Marcie decided to work in the senior living industry. Prior to joining Five Star, Marcie was an Activities Assistant and also a Memory Care Coordinator. Marcie loves working with the residents and their families and tells them they are her “daytime” family. When Marcie is away from the community, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends. 

Jamie Armstrong
Team Leader of Ageility Therapy Solutions

Jamie Armstrong is our Team Leader of Agility Therapy Solutions. Jamie graduated from Floyd College in  Rome, Georgia as a Physical Therapist Assistant and is currently working on her Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Care  Administration and will be graduating in May of 2020. Jamie started in pediatrics and spent many years in sports medicine before finding that she enjoyed working in Geriatrics the most. Jamie has been trained in neurodevelopmental treatment methods (NDT), kinesio taping methods and McKenzie back therapy methods. Jamie is also certified in LSVT BIG for Parkinson’s and dementia capable care. As the Therapy Team Leader, Jamie loves working with talented therapists who share her passion for therapy and providing quality care. Jamie is married to an active duty Marine with a career that has taken them around the world. When she is not working, you will find her and her husband cheering on their two active young sons in their extracurricular activities.
