How many people do you know that are 103 years old? For most, the answer would be not many. But there are many of you around North Myrtle Beach who know someone...Mrs. Pearl Lowman...who celebrated her 103rd birthday on February, 2 2017, at Summit Place of North Myrtle Beach.
The year 1914 was noteworthy for many reasons including the beginning of WWI that erupted in Europe; Henry Ford's introduction of an assembly line for the Model T; the first scheduled commercial flight took place between St. Petersburg and Tampa and most importantly, Pearl Hickman Lowman was born in North Myrtle Beach, SC. Pearl grew up on a farm that is now considered Hickman's Crossing area. She married Louis Murdin whose job was to dig out a major waterway passage now called the Intracoastal Waterway. Pearl and Louis married in Norfolk, VA where they resided for a few years. Later they had two children; Louis and Barbara. They continued to farm, growing sweet potatoes, corn and tobacco. Tobacco was their most important crop as it had the most economic yield. They also raised pigs, chickens and had a mule named, Mary. Pearl recalls that they had a big garden and canned all their own foods. There was even a mill that they would go to make their own cornmeal and grits. "Work was hard" but everyone got together and helped each other work the tobacco farms. She remembers being paid 75 cents per day to do the work. She also recalls that there was no electricity and no indoor plumbing. When it was dark you went to bed and when it was light you got up and went to work. She remembers how excited she was when she went to Wilmington, NC. and saw electricity for the first time. Times were changing fast. Pearl now resides at Summit Place of North Myrtle Beach. She continues to enjoy a wide range of activities. She likes pizza parties, manicures, and music. Just days before her birthday celebration, her son picked her up and they went out for an ice cream cone. Pearl loves ice cream and as you can imagine, spending time with her son makes the taste of ice cream even better.
Happy 103rd Birthday! We love you and best wishes for many more!

Our chefs pride themselves on creating flavorful, flexible menus that make every day a special occasion. Today, they did it for the surrounding community. It was a "Food Truck Event" as Summit Place of NMB brought lunches for Horry County Fire and Police Departments. Matt Harden our Chef prepared delicious roast beef wraps with chips and topped it off with a decadent slice of New York Cheese Cake for dessert. Then we delivered brown bag lunches to all of the local Police and Firemen. They were thrilled. It feels good to give back to the community.

It was a picture perfect day to take our residents, "Team Summit Place NMB", to the 2016 Rally to end Alzheimer's disease, which was held at Market Commons. It is pretty scary to consider that 1 in 3 seniors will get Alzheimer's or some sort of Dementia related disease. In 2016 it will cost the nation 236 Billion. Team Summit Place was proud to be able to do its part to help in finding a cure.
