We had a professional come in to facilitate a drum circle. This gave our residents a chance to express themselves through the sounds of the drums. It is beneficial because it elevates the mood, decreases anxiety, stress, and boosts the immune system. Drumming is a way for a group of diverse people to come together as one and aim for a common goal.

Our wonderful Pastry Chef Rocco recently presented cake decorating tips at a "Tips on How to Decorate Cakes" workshop at the Riverdale Senior Services. Rocco was a huge hit, and as we all know in the community his creations were beautiful. After the demonstration everyone enjoyed a piece of dessert.

On Wednesday, April 13th students from the College of Mount Saint Vincent had an intergenerational forum with a group of residents from the Five Star Premier Residents of Yonkers. The average age of the students was 22 years olds. The average age of the seniors was 85 years old. The discussion yielded different prospective and conclusions about major issues. It also made clear that age whether young or elderly was no barrier to being involved in the formation of public programs. Among the topics examined by the groups were student’s loans, drugs, immigration, and the vacancy on the Supreme Court. John Hunt, Executive Director of the Five Star said “The College is our neighbor and we look forward to collaborating with the College and their Student Government Association on other joint activities.”

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins of New York led a discussion with the objective of educating seniors at our facility on how to protect and prevent them from being scammed. Titled “Smart Seniors” The Assistant Attorney General laid out three ways to ensure seniors protect themselves. First of all simply do not answer the phone if you do not know who is calling, second never wire money or give out finical information, and third do not invest in something you do not understand. “I appreciate the opportunity to warn the residents about common frauds that target older adults, it is our goal to make sure that no resident ever becomes a victim”- Gary Brown, Assistant Attorney General in charge of Westchester Regional office. “I want to thank the state Attorney General’s Office for informing our seniors about scams and frauds. At the Five Star the safety and security of our seniors is our first concern” – Executive Director, John Hunt
