Executive Director

Long term resident of Montgomery County and graduated from the University of Maryland with Bachelor of Science Degree. Joey started his career in senior living at the age of 14 as a dishwasher then a year later became a Dining Room Supervisor.  He also has an extensive background in Hospitality & Operations with Marriott International. In 2004 he began his career with Five Star Senior Living first as the Director of Food and Beverage at Aspenwood then later promoted to the Regional Director of Food and Dining Services for multiple communities & in various states. Joey has always had a fondness for Aspenwood Senior Living Community and returned in 2016 as the Executive Director.  Joey shares that one of his joys is making a difference every day in the lives of his residents.

Director of Sales & Marketing

Shawnna earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services (with a focus in Counseling) from The Metropolitan College of New York. Shawnna is originally from Bronx, New York, born and raised. She relocated from New York to Maryland in 2004 with her then 5 year old daughter, who is now a junior at Towson University and majoring in Electronic Media and Film. 

She brings over 20 years of experience in Health and Human Services, of which the last 14 years involved Skilled Nursing Community, Long-Term Care and  Sub-Acute Rehabilitation Services. Shawnna says seniors hold a special place in her heart which stems from the close relationship she had with her own grandmother who lived over 100 years! In her spare time she enjoys dancing, nature hikes, listening to music, participating in anything fun, making people smile and spending quality time with family and friends. Although she loves Caribbean and Italian cuisines, she admits her weaknesses are cheese, breads and chocolate!

Director of Human Resources & Business Office Manager 

Leigh graduated with a Business Degree from the University of Maryland (Go Terps!). It was during this time that she began her journey into senior living, starting as a server during the summer months. Now with over 10 years of experience working in Dining, Marketing, Nursing, Maintenance and Administration in a senior environment, Leigh has gained skills that allow her to be a “jack of all trades”. When she is not spending time with her residents, Leigh enjoys playing softball and kickball, and spending time with her husband, her family, friends and her two dogs.

Director of Lifestyle360, ADC

It is obvious that Sheila enjoys working with senior adults. She has served in various roles at Aspenwood for more than 20 years. She began as a Move-In Coordinator, then the Assistant Activity Director to later being promoted into the Activity Director/Lifestyle360 Director. She spends her days engaging the residents in research based programs that focus on Five Star’s Five Dimensions of Wellness:  Emotional, Intellectual, Physical, Spiritual and Social. She loves to create programs with the residents input that bring joy and purpose. Sheila’s compassion for seniors has earned her recognition as Maryland Activity Coordinator Professional of the Year, ALFA Champions of Senior Living Recognition and ARC of Montgomery County Community Service recognition award. When Sheila is not at work planning and leading Lifestyle360 programs, or spending time with residents, you will find her going to festivals, plays or shopping with her daughter.

Director of Food and Dining Services

A native of Rockville, Maryland, Chef Stephen earned an Associate in Science degree in Food Service Management and a Bachelor of Science degree in Hospitality Management from Johnson & Wales University.  Before joining the Five Star team, Chef Stephen worked as the Executive Chef for the University of Maryland.

He also has several years of experience working for a number of other senior living communities.   He is a Certified ServSafe and Allergen Food Service Manager through the National Restaurant Association Education Foundation.  He is a member of the Association of Nutrition & Food Service Professionals, and a proud part of the Johnson and Wales Alumni Chef Association.  When he is not serving up exceptional meal for our residents, he enjoys spending time with his wife, children and Pug named Doug.

Director of Resident Care for Independent Living  

Sharon was born and raised in the western portion of the city of Baltimore, MD.  Sharon obtained her diploma in Registered Nursing from the Helene Fuld School of Nursing—Provident Hospital.  During her junior year in nursing school, Sharon attended a dance where she met her soon to be husband.  While raising their three children, Sharon went on to obtain her Bachelor of Nursing from the College of Notre Dame.  In her spare time she loves to travel, garden and read mysteries.

Director of Resident Care for Assisted Living 

Idowu graduated from the University of the District of Columbia with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She also has a diploma in education. She has over twenty four years nursing experience in both acute and long term nursing care.  She has experience in being a nurse educator and a manager of performance improvement.  As an advocate for seniors, she utilized knowledge of regulations with compliance to foster residents’ rights.   She remains an educator at Montgomery College, training and preparing students for becoming Certified Nursing Assistants and Geriatric Nursing Assistants. She is a mother of three sons and in her spare time she enjoys traveling.

Director of Environmental Services 

Sam oversees maintenance, housekeeping and security.  He holds a Third Grade Stationary Engineer License in Maryland.  Certified in Refrigeration,  Air Condition,  Electrical and Residential Wiring. Sam has worked at Aspenwood Senior Living for over twenty eight years and wears many hats.  He works closely with the Aspenwood Team, their residents and families on day to day issue as well as managing outside contractors.  He loves helping people and assisting residents and families with a smooth transition to Aspenwood.
