Resident Uses Technology to Attend Graduation

Joan Miller, 81, a Frederick native now resides at Somerford of Hagerstown. Her granddaughter, Shannon Mumaw, 24, of Smithsburg graduated from Syracuse University Law School with a judicial degree Friday, May 11th. While Miller’s mobility challenges prevented her from attending in person, Somerford team members threw her a graduation party while live streaming the graduation. Mumaw, daughter of Greg and Jodene Mumaw of Smithsburg plans to continue pursuing further education this summer. When Miller watched her granddaughter walk across the stage, she pounded the table and exclaimed with tears in her eyes, “There she is! That’s my granddaughter! Mom Ma is so proud of you!”

Miller beams when ask about her granddaughter and proudly says, “She had this goal in mind and she was going to do it. She didn’t gripe about the work even when going back after a break.” Despite the heavy workload borne by Mumaw, Miller appreciates that she “never forgets a special occasion that involves me.”

Miller watched Mumaw and her brother when they were young and they often recount memories of scavenger hunts in the woods behind her Yellow Springs home for a feather or a pretty rock. Miller says, I am her ‘Mom ma’ and she is wonderful to me.”
