Executive Director

William (Will) Clark joined Somerford Place of Columbia in January 2016. His has a BA in music and occasionally sings professionally. Prior to 2008, Will owned a small advertising agency servicing well known clients in the Baltimore/Washington market. During the Great Recession, as many business curtailed budgets, Will closed his ad agency and began working part-time as a caregiver for two elderly men. It was transformative. As he put it, “Both gentlemen had dementia but were very different. One needed a lot of physical assistance as result of a stroke. While doing some of the most difficult tasks, we’d have the best conversations about his life. I hated leaving at the end of the day. The other gentleman basically told me the same stories every time I arrived but I enjoyed hearing them. We’d drink coffee all day, listen to Irish music, and play scrabble. He would complain about his memory whenever he wanted to change the rules. I truly came to love both of them!” When he decided to make assisted living his career path, he worked in sales at an area assisted living for about seven years before being recruited to Somerford Place Columbia. Under his leadership and with the help of the management team, Somerford Place Columbia enjoys consistently high scores for team members and resident satisfaction.

Sales and Marketing Director

Melanie has been in Health Care since 2014. Although she said she wished she had known how great this profession was earlier she was delighted that she finally found her favorite career. Melanie helped open Genesis Waugh Chapel a skilled nursing facility in Gambrills, Md, in 2014. Her role was Director of Guest Services. There she developed the role and became the ambassador of guest services. After learning the industry she got her passion job at Somerford Place Columbia as Director of Sales. "I love not only working with the residents that come in but my passion is understanding what the family members are going through and coming along side of them and helping them through the process of bringing their loved one to our community. I love what I do every day and know I am helping families deal with this difficult situation”.

Melanie spends time out in the community getting to know other professionals working directly or indirectly in the industry. Together we all work together to make sure our families get to the right place and have everything they need! Melanie has two daughters and two granddaughters that keep her very happy and busy. Melanie was a flight attendant for Continental and United Airlines. It only makes sense that her hobby in life is to travel around the world somewhere different every year!

Program and Bridge to Rediscovery Director

Judi boasts more than 20 years of management experience in both the hospital and senior living sectors. She graduated with a Master’s Degree in Social Work in 1987 where she worked as a hospital social worker for several years before becoming the Director of Social Work at a Genesis Skilled Nursing Facility.  After several years working in nursing home social work, Judi joined the assisted living arena as a Director of Programming, where she has remained for the past 16 years. As program Director and Bridge to Rediscovery Director for Somerford Place, Judi is responsible for the engagement of our residents that are challenged with dementia.  Judi is also a Certified Dementia Practitioner and is responsible for training team members in both dementia educations, dealing with behaviors associated with dementia, and customer service. She manages the monthly support group, and serves on the Alzheimer Walk Committee for Howard County.

Food Service Director

Chef is the Food Service Director at Somerford Place Columbia.  Chef Charlie oversees the dietary department and ensures all of our resident’s nutritional needs are met while serving them delicious home cooked meals. He started his career with Five Star Senior Living with Somerford Place Annapolis. After Leaving for other opportunities Chef Charlie came back to Five Star Senior Living with Somerford Place of Columbia.  When he isn’t at Somerford Place, Charlie enjoys spending time with his family and watching local sports.

Director of Resident Care

Christiana has been serving seniors in the nursing field for almost 30 years.  She began her career as a Caregiver while she attended Nursing school in Virginia.  She graduated with her nursing degree in 1993 and worked for 22 years as the Assisted Living Coordinator in a senior living community.  Christiana came to Five Star Senior Living in 2016 as the Director of Resident Care. In this position, Christiana manages the clinical care of our residents.  She is responsible for the evaluation, coordination and direction of all resident care needs, as well as providing direct care to our residents, to assure quality care. She oversees the nursing team and care-giving team, providing education, training, hiring, and work assignments; as well as working with families and outside vendors. In addition to her nursing degree, Christiana is a Certified Dementia Practitioner and Assisted Living Manager. Christiana has 3 adult children and is active in her church.  In her free time she enjoys doing charity work in her community for those in need.

Director of Rehabilitation at Somerford Place, Ageility Physical Therapy Solution

Bejal is an Occupational Therapist and the Director of Rehabilitation at Somerford Place Columbia.  She coordinates all of the therapy needs of our residents by arranging their Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy that is ordered by their doctor; as well as offering a Personal Fitness program for those that desire personal training. Bejal coordinates much of the medical equipment needs that benefit our residents and offers training to our team members for safety and positioning of our residents. As an Occupational Therapist, Bejal helps our residents overcome physical, mental, social, and developmental problems, assisting them with everyday living tasks so they can function as independently as possible.  At Somerford Place, Bejal provides recommendations for environmental modifications, and may develop programs to address mobility, dementia management, low vision needs, fall prevention, and obstacles that are preventing a resident from doing the things him or her once did.

Bejal graduated from Towson University in 2008 with a Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy. She is a Certified Dementia Practitioner and Certified in the provision of the Allen Cognitive Level Screen.  She has worked at Five Star Senior Living since 2011, providing services at both Somerford Place Columbia, and our sister community, Heartlands of Ellicott City.  Bejal worked in subacute and inpatient settings prior to joining Five Star.  Bejal lives in Ellicott City with her husband and two sons who keep her busy with their love for soccer and basketball.

Business Office Manager

Lisa is a longtime Howard County resident who has worked as our Business Office Manager since 2003. Lisa manages resident billing, purchasing, payroll and Human Resources as well as overseeing the concierges.  Lisa’s years of service and extensive knowledge has made her the go to person for staff and families alike. Lisa’s commitment to making every moment matter for our residents comes from her mother who was a nurse in the community for over 40 years. In her spare time Lisa likes to spend time with her family.

Maintenance Director

Giovanni is a Maintenance Director at Somerford Place Columbia, where leads and maintains the facilities day to day operations. He was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. Mr. Murphy has been in the assistant living setting for over 8 years in various positions such as maintenance specialist, maintenance mechanic, and facilities manager to insure the facility reaches life safety and state regulations. He has worked for reputable companies such as Pierce Military Housing of Fort Meade, St. Agnes hospital, and Catholic Charities. Giovanni has 3 sons, Sincere, Channing, and Baz. Giovanni loves spending his off time help coaching his son’s football team, and doing numerous outdoor activities with Baltimore’s youth group.
