Caregiver of the Month

One of our family members, Sharon, was chosen as care giver of the month! She was kind enough to share with us her and her husband's story.

"My husband and I have been married almost 53 years. Unfortunately, he has had to have many surgeries and treatments over the past 13 years. He started in 2006 with neurological problems, i.e. memory, balance issues, confusion, etc.  He was diagnosed with early onset Dementia and underwent a lot of testing. I was able to take care of him at home along with all of his medical appointments for about 10 years but it became more and more difficult and I started having some health issues.

We have two wonderful daughters who live with their families out of state and they visit as much as possible. I tried to use in-home support the last year or two but they weren’t very reliable. So, I had to move my husband to Somerford Place Annapolis in December of 2015, which is about an hour from our home.

I go almost every day, along with our little 5 year dog Toby, to be with my husband. We have lunch together and I participate and help out in all the activities with him. He is so happy to see me every day and he also loves visits from our friends and family that live in the area.

Reading research books on taking care of a loved one with Dementia have been very helpful. Also, attending support group meetings at Somerford Place Annapolis, as well as programs provided by Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities, have been very informative. Networking is extremely important!"
