When he became President in 1901, 42 year old Theodore Roosevelt-adventurer, soldier, reformer, conservationist- represented a young, vibrant and fast growing America. He initiated much needed reforms in a rapidly changing America, built a modern Navy and commenced construction of the Panama Canal. His "walk softly but carry a big stick” foreign policy, would propel America to become the world's dominant power in the 20th century – the "American Century."
