Our Secret to Creating Activities That Keep Up With Our Residents

  • July 02, 2019

Our communities are filled with active, independent residents who are always up to something to new. To keep up with them, we have a team of creative activities specialists that are almost as impressive as these energetic older adults. When visitors first come to a Five Star community and get a glimpse of the extensive activities calendar, we often hear surprise and delight that we manage to organize such a wide variety of activities. To give a glimpse at our activities planning approach, we thought we'd share a look behind the scenes of Five Star's holistic approach to active community living: Lifestyle360.

A holistic activities approach is a key element to the Five Star Difference.
A move to a new home or community, like any major life change or shift in routine, can bring anxiety and apprehension — no matter what age you are. Having a broad range of activities to dive right into is key to building relationships and finding comfort and belonging in a new community.

In addition to the number of options, the breadth of activity types is key, too. Lifestyle360 offers a mix of physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and social activities to choose from. Health and Wellness is one of the three key pillars of Five Star communities, and a rich, diverse offering of activities helps support our residents' well-being.

Fun is fundamental!
Sure, there's a lot of science in our Lifestyle360 programming — but studies also show us that fun activities are better for you, too! A sense of play is key to keeping mentally alert, staying engaged in an activity long-term, and building relationships. We've got plenty of data to inform what activities do best and complement each other, but we always start with this question: What do you want to do?

Meaningful activities develop a strong sense of purpose.
Our activities calendar is led by our creative activities planning team. These team members do more than simply organize fun events and outings. They create robust, personalized, evidence-based opportunities that offer engaging and purposeful moments for each resident. Studies have shown that a strong sense of purpose is linked to longevity.

Programming is tailored to each community.
While creating activities, we always keep in mind who we are creating them for. This might sound obvious, but it's one reason that our activities calendar looks different at every community. Our Lifestyle360 team really gets to know the residents and culture at each community. This ensures that within each activity there's a true reflection of the identity of the community and the needs and interests of its residents.

Our approach to activities is resident-supporting and resident-led.
Since our Lifestyle360 program is created for older adults, there are plenty of fun options for activities that are accessible to people with all levels of mobility. But make no mistake; our residents are also independent and active, and each has their own area of expertise. Our activities team works in collaboration with residents to create programs that are resident-requested or even resident-led.
