While a move might not be on your radar for the immediate future, taking a proactive approach to planning for your future or that of an older loved one gives you the time you need to make an informed choice.
Questions for Your Visit to an Assisted Living Community
After you’ve done your initial research and identified a few independent or assisted living communities you’d like to visit, set up tours so that you can see each of them for yourself.
Be sure to come prepared with questions for the staff. Important ones to ask include:
Question #1: How Secure is the Community?
Safety and security are priorities in any new home purchase, and a senior living community is no exception. Is a receptionist stationed at the entrance to the community to greet guests and unknown visitors from accessing resident areas? Are exterior doors kept locked after hours? How is the community accessed? Is there a fence or brick wall around the perimeter of the property?
Take time to walk around by yourself and listen to your instincts. If they are telling you that it doesn’t feel safe, you should probably investigate those concerns more.
The same holds true for the neighborhood surrounding the community. Take time to drive around, as well as to research the local crime statistics.
Question #2: Is the Location Convenient?
Aside from considering the safety of the surrounding neighborhood, it’s also nice to have amenities, such as grocery stores, restaurants, shops and doctor’s offices within an easy driving radius.
When you visit an assisted living community in Indiana, be sure to find out whether or not they provide free transportation “off-campus. This allows you or your senior family member more freedom when it comes to outside activities and appointments.
Question #3: Can I Speak to Current Residents?
When you visit an assisted living community, take time to sit down and talk with current residents and their families. Ask them about their own experience with choosing a senior living community and how they’ve adjusted to the move. They also might be able to provide you with helpful tips when it comes time to move in.
Question #4: Are There Specific Visiting Hours?
When you have a big family--including children, grandchildren, or even great grandchildren--it’s nice to know whether or not they would be able to come visit you at a time that is convenient for them.
Many independent living communities have open door policies, which allow family and friends to visit with you for as long as they’d like. If you end up transitioning into assisted living, however, there may be stricter guidelines regarding visiting hours. Be sure to inquire about the visiting policies when you tour senior living communities.
