Keeping Hydrated in the Summer Heat

Hydration

The heat of the summer is here and cities nationwide are experiencing record-breaking intense heat waves.  Extreme heat can especially affect seniors, because as part of the aging process, our thirst perception decreases, placing seniors at increased risk for dehydration.

Water is the ideal thirst quencher and is absorbed best by the body. But here are some additional tips if you're caring for a senior, or if you want creative ideas for staying hydrated in the heat:

  • Infuse water with fresh fruit for a beverage with greater appeal
  • Offer chilled lemonade and fruit drinks to friends and family
  • Serve popsicles and Jell-O as an in-between meal snack
  • Include fluid-dense foods, such as watermelon or berries, with meals as a summer dessert
  • Encourage your loved ones - and remember for yourself - to drink extra fluids when taking medications
  • Limit caffeinated beverages, such as coffee and cola-type drinks, as they are hydration robbers.
  • Most of all, remember to keep yourself, your family and your pets hydrated with plenty of water, especially if you’re active and spending time outdoors.

Enjoy the  summer days ahead and stay hydrated!
